In an exciting new development, Verizon have announced Waymap as one of the companies chosen to participate in the ground-breaking Forward for Good Accelerator.

Waymap will join other technology start-ups in the Disability Innovation Cohort. The accelerator is being run by Verizon, in partnership with Alley.

Verizon is one of the largest communication technology companies in the world. The company offers voice, data and video services and solutions on its award-winning networks and platforms, delivering on customers’ demand for mobility, reliable network connectivity, security and control.

The Waymap Mission

Waymap aim to provide the most accessible navigation app ever to cities around the world. Navigation apps are essential to connecting people and places, take up of public transport and living independently, but don’t work for everyone and don’t work inside for anyone. This means that people with disabilities, or even people with less confidence in their own mobility, are excluded, need extra help and resources to make a journey, or are isolated at home.

Because Waymap’s breakthrough technology was developed for blind people and to enable independent living, we are a huge advance on all other navigation apps. With Waymap deployed, we know that people with disabilities are willing and able to use public transit systems instead of taxi services or private cars. Improved mobility also helps people live more independent, fuller and healthier lives.

Waymap & Verizon’s Forward for Good Accelerator

First launched in April and in partnership with innovation agency Alley, the Verizon Forward for Good Accelerator is a start-up accelerator program to help innovators scale their innovative solutions, and to drive meaningful social change These solutions, which utilise leading-edge technology such as 5G, MEC, AI and XR, aim to empower individuals with disabilities to live more independent lives and/or remove barriers for those with disabilities.

Start-ups applying to the Accelerator needed to be founded by people with disabilities, have authentically integrated people with disabilities into executive leadership roles, and have validated their technology solutions within the disability community.

Start-ups accepted into the 16-week accelerator program will receive access to a wealth of resources, including workshops, technology coaching, mentorship, networking, and additional funding to help them scale.

It will also offer further opportunity to test technologies within the disability community.

The Verizon Forward for Good Accelerator serves as only one initiative under Citizen Verizon, the company’s responsible business plan to move the world forward for all through economic, environmental and social advancement.
