Waymap licences world leading location technology

Waymap has secured exclusive access to Cambridge Consultants breakthrough technology for indoor location for audio navigation services; Trace.

Delivering accurate indoor location information is the holy grail for developers of position systems. Many existing systems rely on expensive fixed infrastructure of multiple radio signals which are often unreliable, especially in public spaces busy with people and are unable to deliver an accuracy of location required for audio navigation. The question is how to achieve the same goal when there is no external infrastructure to reference?

Cambridge Consultants created advanced algorithms by harnessing their understanding of inertial sensors and the mechanics of human motion gained from extensive work in fitness technology development. The algorithms are the secret ingredient and allowed Cambridge Consultants to achieve the same performance that had previously required expensive bulky equipment - but in a small wearable device.

The resulting Trace positioning system is able to provide location without external references such as GPS or other radio signals. Accuracy of location to within a few per cent of the distance travelled without external references has been achieve in a range of trials.

Waymap and Cambridge Consultants are now working together to apply this ground-breaking technology to the life-changing delivery of audio navigation for vision impaired and vulnerable people.

Tim Fowler, Head of Wireless and Digital Services at Cambridge Consultants said “We pride ourselves in delivering technology that makes an impact and are absolutely delighted to be able to take technology proven in one domain and apply it another in such a hugely rewarding way”.

Tim Murdoch, Co-founder and CEO of Waymap said “Our community need us to deliver a breakthrough in location technology and I am very pleased to be able to build on Cambridge Consultants' world leading technology and expertise in this area to make it happen.”
